International Implications of Rising Powers
When and how do rising powers translate domestic achievements and historical narratives into influence abroad?
Existing accounts of international influence emphasize material capabilities, economic ties, and coercive leverage. Yet power does not automatically produce emulation. Foreign audiences must also see a rising power's experience as relevant to their own circumstances and its development path as feasible to follow.
My research examines these ideational foundations of international influence. It studies how rising powers present their histories and development experiences to foreign audiences, how claims of similarity make those models more persuasive, and when audiences accept or reject them.
